[Also in Division F4] In a continuous smelting-refining process preheated and pre-reduced oxidic ores in agglomerated or particulate form are fed continuously into the arc zone of an electric furnace, the latter having separate but inter-connected smelting, refining and slag-separation zones. As illustrated in Fig. 1, agglomerated pre-reduced ore at 400-1250‹C. is fed at 11 into the arc zone 6 of a furnace where it is smelted to produce a semi-steel having 0À5 to 4% carbon and not more than 1% silicon, the bath being circulated by an electromagnetic stirrer. Reduction is effected by carbonaceous material contained in the agglomerates or added therewith, possibly assisted by molten pig iron introduced through launder 27. Molten metal passes through refining zone 14 where it is treated with oxygen and basic fluxes from lances 16, 16<SP>1</SP> , after which it passes under slag bridge 22 to deoxidizing chamber 23. The slag formed in the refining zones flow countercurrent to the metal and passes to the separation zone 15. In a modification of the invention, Fig.3 (not shown), the slag separation zone opens from the refining zone, while in a further modification Fig. 4 (not shown) the refining zone is subdivided by a slag bridge 39, each subdivision having its own slag separation zone.</p> |
