The invention relates to a novel process for the preparation and isolation of alkyloxiranes, in which alkenes having 10 to 20 C atoms are reacted with a solution of a percarboxylic acid having 3 or 4 C atoms in an organic solvent at 40-90 DEG C at a molar ratio of alkene to percarboxylic acid of 1.5:1 to 5:1, where, in the solution of the percarboxylic acid, certain amounts of water, hydrogen peroxide and mineral acids must not be exceeded, and the reaction mixture is worked up by distillation, as much fresh alkene being added to the separated, unreacted alkene as has been consumed, and it is recirculated into the reaction with percarboxylic acid and the solvent and the resulting carboxylic acid are removed in purified form. This process is particularly economical and environmentally friendly.
