The device consists of a gripper formed from two levers 3 connected together by an articulation pin 4. Each of the levers carries a bearing stop 5, a roller 10 mounted so as to rotate on the lever 3 about an axis parallel to the articulation pin 4 and a drive means 15 for rotationally driving the roller 10 about its axis. The rollers are placed facing each other so as to provide between their grooves a space for allowing passage of the cylindrical element 1. The device is operated by closing up the gripper in order to grip the cylindrical element 1 between the rollers 10, then bringing the stops 5 of the levers into bearing contact on the external face of the plate 2 and by actuating the drive means 15. The rollers are set into rotation in opposite directions so as to exert a traction force on the element 1. <IMAGE>
