A sheet of threads 2 is fed vertically downwards 'by means of clamps 3, 4 to implant the ends of the threads in an adhesive layer 1. The clamp 3 then opens, rises, and closes, followed by the clamp 4, which rises just above the level of a knife 7. Jaws 5, 6 close to grip the threads whilst the knife 7 cuts them, whereupon the adhesive layer advances and the cycle is repeated. In another form, the threads are cut before their ends are implanted in the adhesive; the jaws 5, 6 are omitted, but a member similar to the jaw 6 has a depending flange to hold the pile upright whilst the next row is being implanted as described in Specification 1,077,070. |
