A mixture of sulphur with a thione is polymerized using a cationic polymerization catalyst. The thione may have the general formula R1R2C=S in which R1 and R2 represent a hydrogen atom, an aliphatic group, a cycloaliphatic group or an aromatic group and may be the same or different. Lewis acids, particularly boron trifluoride, are specified catalysts, while a plasticizer may also be present during polymerization-a sulphide, selenide, or telluride of a Group VB element being specified. Examples are given of the polymerization of sulphur with (I)-(III) S-trithiane, (IV) (A) trithioacetaldehyde (B) and (D) trithiobenzaldehyde, and (V) thiobenzophenone.ALSO:A mixture of sulphur and a thione is subjected to polymerization in the presence of a cationic polymerization catalyst. The amount of sulphur may vary from 0.5 to 99.5% of the total mixture but is preferably from 50 to 95%. The thione may have the general formula R1R2C = S in which either or both R1 and R2 is or are hydrogen, an aliphatic group, a cycloaliphatic group or an aromatic group. The catalyst may by a Lewis acid, e.g. boron trifluoride or its ethyl ether complex. The mixture may be heated to up to 250 DEG C. before the addition of the catalyst. Plasticizers e.g. a sulphide selenide, or telluride of Group IIb may be present during polymerization. Examples are given of the polymerization of sulphur with (I)-(III) S-trithiane, (IV) (A) trithioacetaldehyde, (B) and (D) trithiobenzaldehyde and (V) thiobenzophenone. |
