Each string 23 of a keyboard instrument is sounded by a pad 70 having a non-hardening adhesive layer 74 which normally rests on the string. When a key 50 is depressed, pad 70 and string 23 are raised until the tension in the string overcomes the adhesive force, whereupon the string vibrates to produce a tone similar to a harpsichord. Pad 70 possesses some resilience, and when lowered, dampens string 23. Pad 70 (Figs. 7A, 7B, 7C, 7D, 9, 10, not shown) comprises sponge rubber or polyfoam stiffened along its vertical edges with lacquer or glue, wood with a rubber layer # inch thick above the adhesive layer 1/16-1/32 inch thick, or wood with a layer of a plastic material. In this last case, the string sinks into the material, and a damping vertical felt spigot (79) is attached at one edge of the pad. For high notes, adhesive may be applied to the string in a portion “-3/ 8 inch long. A metal pin (84) may be positioned beneath string 23 and be connected to the pad by a rubber tube (83). When the pad is raised quickly, tube (83) snaps upwardly, and pin (84) strikes string 23, to give a secondary note. In all cases damping pads may be added to the strings. Keys 50 are pivoted at 55, biased to their normal position at 57, and limited in their movement by felt pads at 62, 64. The lugs are mounted on a board 51 which is screwed at each end to a base 13 of the instrument. A rod (20), (Fig. 8, not shown) is provided to rock the board 51, and hence lift all the pads 70 off strings 23, and thus equalize the adhesive power during subsequent use. One, two or three key manuals are provided. An enclosure beneath keys 50 contains tuning pins 25 to which the free ends of strings 23 are connected, the strings being doubled over a hitch bar (29), (Fig. 5, not shown) at the opposite end of the instrument. Bridges 69 and (27) are provided, one of which may be combined with hitch bar (29), and one of which may be used to electrically earth strings 23, so that pick-up coils (33) (Figs. 3A 3B, 4, not shown) may be used efficiently. There are twelve coils (33), connected in series and positioned along the strings for the desired harmonic content of the sound, and each extends over five strings except for a coil over the lowest six strings. Each coil (33) comprises twenty-five turns over a magnetic plastics cone with steel flux directing side-plates (36), and is fixed to the base 13 and above strings 23.
