A fracture fixation device for insertion into the medullary canal of a fractured bone comprises a rod 21 with a plurality of longitudinally spaced slots (25), Fig. I (not shown) transversely extending therethrough, the slots being suitable for receiving screws 27, 54 used to secure compression plates 45, 55 on the exterior of the bone to provide longitudinal compression to the fracture site. The rod may be of a cross-section of sufficient size to extend substantially across the medullary canal and thereby hold the fractured portions against transverse movement. In an alternative embodiment, the rod may also have a helical groove (221), Fig. 14, (not shown) forming a bone engaging thread on its periphery for compressing the bone longitudinally as the rod is screwed into position. |
