To provide an improved signal-to-noise ratio in a gyromagnetic spectrometer, instead of sweeping the field or frequency the R. F. signal is pulsed say for 100 Ás every second (producing side bands) and the resulting audioresonance-signal is stored in a time-averaging computer as discrete components by scanning the signal so that e.g. 1000 bits of signal are derived every second and stored in 1000 channels so that for each scan, each storage channel sees substantially the same data bit, apart from random noise. The resonance signal such as that in Fig. 3 is applied through a gate 28 opened by a sequencer 30 for 100 Ás every millisecond, to an amplitude-to-time converter 34 to provide constant amplitude variable width pulses which trigger a gated oscillator 38 to produce bursts of oscillations (proportional to the original input amplitude). The number of cycles in each burst is counted in a binary counter 42 and stored in a ferrite core register having e. g. a 1000 rows (channels). After e.g. 500 scans, readout may be initiated by a parallel-to-series converter, recorded on tape and fed to a digital computer for Fourier analysis and the resultant waveform displayed and recorded. The Specification also refers to the use of a reference sample e.g. hexaflurobenzene in addition to the unknown sample; a dispersion mode signal from the reference sample being used to stabilize the field in known manner, Fig. 4 (not shown). |
