The inner and outer surfaces of a pressure vessel 7 and a nut 12 are formed with helical grooves 15, 16 positioned opposite each other to define a helical passage in which is disposed a hollow resilient member 17. The width of a clearance space which is provided between the outer peripheries of the member and the surfaces of the grooves decreases progressively along the length of the member in the direction of an applied load tending to move the nut axially with respect to the vessel. The nut presses a thrust washer 13 on to an enlarged portion 10 of the cover 9. The pitch diameter of the grooves in the nut or vessel may progressively increase in the direction of the applied load, or the cross-section of the member 17 may progressively increase in the direction of the applied load, or the grooved surface of the nut or the vessel, or both, may respectively increase or decrease in diameter in the direction of the applied load. The member 17 may be in the form of several springs, segments of tubes, or members which are C-shaped in cross-section and strung on a wire or rod which extends along the helical path formed by the grooves. |
