PURPOSE:To execute focus detecting operation appropriate for each mode by expanding a focus detecting area in a 1st mode for driving a lens to a focusing position based on a focus detecting result and narrowing the focus detecting area in a 2nd mode for executing only focus detection. CONSTITUTION:The titled device is provided with the 1st and 2nd focus detecting means 1, 2 and a focus detecting area based upon the former means 1 is wider than that based upon the latter means 2. When the 1st mode for driving the lens to the focusing position based on the focus detecting result is selected by the manual operation of an operating means 3, the 1st focus detecting means 1 is selected by a selecting means 4 and a focus detecting area is expanded at that time. Thereby, an object to be focused over a wide range can be searched and automatically focused. When the 2nd mode for executing only focus detection by the manual operation of the means 3, the 2nd focus detecting means 2 is selected by a selecting means 4 and the focus detecting area at that time is narrowed. Consequently, the focus detection of an aimed object can be accurately executed. |
