<p>An apparatus connecting a central axle trailer (14) to a vehicle (68). The apparatus (10) includes an intermediate hitch support (18) having rotatably mounted ground engaging wheels (20). The intermediate hitch support (18) has a trailer drawbar hitch point (42) whereby a trailer drawbar (16) is attached to the intermediate hitch support (18) such that hitch weight is borne by the intermediate hitch support (18). An intermediate drawbar (22) is provided having ends (48, 50) pivotally mounted to a trailer drawbar (16) for movement about a transverse horizontal axis (24), and an opposed end (38) with means for attachment (38) to a tow vehicle (68). A pair of spaced apart steering arms (32, 34) is provided having tow vehicle ends (36) and intermediate hitch support ends (40). The improvement is characterized by the intermediate hitch support (18) having an axle (19) that is free to move fore and aft relative to the trailer drawbar hitch point (42). The steering arms (32, 34) are rigid and of a fixed length. The fore and aft movement of the axle (19) of the intermediate hitch support (18) relative to the trailer drawbar hitch point (42) accommodates simultaneous fore movement and simultaneous aft movement of the intermediate hitch support ends (40) of the steering arms (32, 34), with the steering arms (32, 34) serving to control the amount of fore movement and aft movement of the axle (19).</p> |
