摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which satisfies electromagnetic conversion characteristic and further has small head wear and excellent traveling durability. SOLUTION: A magnetic layer is formed by applying ferromagnetic metallic powder consisting essentially of iron and having a spindle shape of <=0.15 &mu;m average major axis length together with a binder resin. At least one layer of the magnetic layer is formed directly on a nonmagnetic supporting body or via at least one layer of adhering layers or via a nonmagnetic layer consisting essentially of nonmagnetic inorganic powder and the binder. In the magnetic recording medium having 2 to 6 nm central surface average surface roughness Ra of a magnetic layer surface, steel ball abrasion loss under circumstances of 23 deg.C and 70%RH is 2 to 4&times;10-5 mm3, surface C/Fe ratio measured by Auger electron spectroscopy is 50 to 100 and friction coefficient between the magnetic layer surface and a sus bar of 8 to 10 nm roughness is 0.2 to 0.3.
