A boring or drillng machine of the type having a horizontal tool spindle 51 and a worktable 2 movable horizontally in a direction normal to the spindle axis has the spindle head 3, which is movable on a vertical column 1a constructed in two parts; a first part 6 fixed against movement in the horizontal plane and provided with slides 9 and the driving means for rotating the spindle; and a second part 7 supported and movable horizontally on the slides 9 in a direction parallel to the spindle axis and provided with control means for moving itself along the slides. The spindle is formed of tubular elements (19), (25) and (22) (Fig. 3, not shown), keyed together for rotation, element (25) sliding within element (19) during movement of the second part 7 of the spindle head. Passing through the spindle is an axial rod (30) for unlocking the tool from the spindle nose 8, said rod (30) having a thimble piston (31) for hydraulic or pneumatic operation. The driving means for rotating the spindle comprises a motor (10) and gear-box arrangement shown in Fig. 2 (not shown). The control means for the moving part 7 includes a motor (32), worm drive (33), (34) and a two-speed arrangement with clutches (46), (49) for driving a pinion (35a) engaging a rack (39), all shown in Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). |
