By heat treatment of comminuted wood, by moving it in a continuous or discontinuous flow, heating it directly to at least 270 degrees C by radiant heat with at least partial exclusion of air to induce dry distillation of the wood, adding water or steam to the smoky distillation product in statu nascendi produced by the exothermic process starting above 270 degrees C, with the maximum processing temp. limited to 370 degrees C. - The process can be controlled more easily and is more economic than prior art methods.
