PURPOSE:To produce a halogenated aromatic compound at a low temperature in a high efficiency without discharging waste liquid by directly halogenating an aromatic compound with a molecular halogen in gaseous phase using a specific zeolite as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:(A) An aromatic compound (preferably a benzene compound, especially phthalic anhydride) is reacted with (B) a molecular halogen (preferably molecular chlorine) in gaseous phase at preferably 150-500 deg.C using (C) a zeolite produced by cation-exchanging at least a part of ion-exchangeable cations with zinc ion, especially preferably type beta zeolite to obtain the corresponding halogenated aromatic compound. The ion exchange ratio of the component C with zinc is preferably 1-95%, especially 10-50%. |
