<p>Chromium dioxide having a tetragonal crystal structure of the rutile type is prepd. by heating a compound containing chromium of valency more than 4 e.g. CrO3 to between 320 and 450 degrees C at a pressure of 1-100 atmospheres in the presence of 0.1-10% of a crystal nucleus of e.g. CrO2, TiO2, CrSbO4. Oxides or salts of other metals e.g. SbCl3, Li2CO3, Sb2O3 may also be present. The magnetic properties of the chromium dioxide obtained in this way are particularly high.</p> |
