Bright coatings without tackiness which are hardened quickly are prepared by mixing (a) unsaturated allyl esters, (b) the allyl esters with unsaturated polyesters prepared from glycols and from unsaturated dibasic acids, or (c) the polyesters with styrene or methyl methacrylate with an alkoxy a -phenyl acetophenone, applying the mixture to the surface to be coated and then subjecting the whole coating to ultra-violet radiation to harden the coating. The allyl esters may be esters of mono- or polybasic acids. Benzoin methyl ether and benzoin ethyl ether are the preferred alkoxy a -phenyl acetophenones. In the examples (1) a polyester formed from maleic and phthalic anhydrides, ethylene glycol and 1,2-propylene glycol is dissolved in styrene or methyl methacrylate and mixed with benzoin methyl ether or benzoin methyl ether together with benzoin ethyl ether and the mixture applied to an aluminium or wood plate and irradiated to produce a hardened coating; and (2) diallyl phthalate is mixed with colloidal silicon dioxide and benzoin methyl ether and applied to an aluminium or wood plate and polymerized as in Example (1).ALSO:A substrate, e.g. aluminium or wood, is coated with a mixture of (a) an unsaturated allyl ester, (b) the allyl ester and an unsaturated polyester prepared from glycols and from unsaturated dibasic acids, or (c) the polyester with styrene or methyl methacrylate, together with an alkoxy a -phenyl acetophenone and the whole coating is hardened by subjection to U.V. radiation. |
