[Also in Division F2] The dust seal 20 for the stud end of a ball-joint 10 is a flexible resilient member 44, hemispherical when unstressed, with integral external reinforcing ribs 26 which extend longitudinally from the opening 24 for the tapered surface 14 of the ball stud member 12 and bias the internal sealing surface 22 (Fig. 3, not shown) towards its mating surface 28 on the ball-joint housing 16 thus eliminating the need for external clamping means. In one embodiment axially extending protrusions 40 are provided on the inner surface of the neck portion 30 (Fig. 3, not shown) to prevent the development of a pressure differential between inner and outer surfaces of the dust seal. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the sealing surface 22 is replaced by two sealing surfaces 50 and 52 axially and radially displaced to provide a double seal lower lip. |
