An improved handheld scanning apparatus (130) for recording and storing undistorted, high resolution images, a mechanical alignment and guiding system, and an optical system that projects a visible light beam (145) onto a substrate (115) to align and guide a handheld scanning apparatus over data to be scanned are disclosed. The handheld scanning apparatus is ergonomically designed to comfortably fit into a human hand and allows a user to operate the handheld scanning apparatus in a manner similar to a "highlighter" marker. Thus, the user can move the visible light beam across a single or multiple lines of text (or graphics) to electronically retrieve and store the data in bitmapped format in an internal non-volatile memory. A LCD display is integrated into the handheld scanning device to display a variety of information including scanned bitmapped text and graphics in real-time. The scanned bitmap data may be transferred to a remove device (e.g., a personal computer) via a serial or infrared communication link (150) for subsequent processing, such as conversion to text using appropriate optical character recognition software. |
