The applicator has a collar carrier (8) formed of articulated sections (8a-c) which can be moved to a deployed position to allow insertion of the collar into a seating which holds the collar. The collar carrier places and locks the collar on the sides of the container and its cover, placed on a positioning support (11) to hold it locked and release at the end of the operating cycle when the two ends of the collar are fixed. A punch assembly (21-23) deforms the metal on the upper and lower edges of the collar to assure reliable connection of the two ends of the collar.
