The invention concerns a method for the carboxylation on an aminonaphtol and more particularly of 5-amino-1-naphtol which consists in preparing an aminonaphtol salt by reacting aminonaphtol and a base, and then in carrying out the carboxylation of the resulting salt characterised in that the aminonaphtol salt is prepared in an organic solvent having a boiling point less than 160 DEG C and forming an azeotropic mixture with water; the water is eliminated by azeotropic distillation and carbon dioxide is introduced so as to obtain the carboxylic compound.
