As shown the conical workpiece 22 is mounted for longitudinal movement relative to a cutter 24 on a slide 10 moved by a rotating lead screw 26. A differential gear 42 has a housing 44 rotated from the lead screw 26 and has an output shaft 52 which drives the work spindle. A control cam 80 also driven from the lead screw 26 is arranged to displace a rack 72 geared to an input shaft 66 of the differential gear the cam profile being adapted to effect the desired modification through the differential gear of the speed of the work spindle to maintain a constant cutting speed. The rack may be retracted rapidly from the cam 80 by a fluid pressure cylinder and piston 98. Alternatives for providing a variable speed input to the differential or other planetary gear are referred to, viz, a variable speed motor controlled by a variable resistor controlled in accordance with the position of the tool or a piston and cylinder arrangement controlled by a suitable control valve.
