[Also in Division C1] Ferrite monocrystals having a particle size of up to 104 microns are produced by heating, at 1345-1385‹ C. in an atmosphere of 5% oxygen and 95% nitrogen, a compressed finely divided mixture of the polycrystalline material, or a mixture which produces the polycrystalline material on heating, and a flux in a quantity insufficient to cause noticeable melting. Heating may be by passage through a furnace having a temperature gradient. The material may be manganese or nickel/cobalt ferrite. The flux may be barium, boron or lead oxide.
