For reasons of weight, aluminium alloy materials or fibre-reinforced plastics materials are used in the manufacture of universal-joint shafts, the said shafts consisting of at least one shaft section and two metallic joint components. The joint components are manufactured, in particular, from an aluminium alloy and are, for example, connected to a plastic shaft section by being pressed in. If the shaft section is also composed of an aluminium alloy, the connection is made by welding, for example friction welding. In the region of the connections, thin-walled sleeves made of steel are attached and balance weights are spot-welded onto these sleeves by resistance welding.
