A method for producing dodecahydrododecaborates is provided to reduce the production costs and decrease production of chlorinated clusters as by-products by using no diborane in the production process. The dodecahydrododecaborates are produced by reacting at least one metal tetrahydroborate with at least one Bronsted or Lewis acid and at least one Lewis base, wherein the metal tetrahydroborate is lithium tetrahydroborate, sodium tetrahydroborate or potassium tetrahydroborate, or alkali earth metal tetrahydroborate selected from calcium tetrahydroborate and magnesium tetrahydroborate; the Bronsted acid is hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, acetic acid, formic acid, boric acid, trialkylammonium hydrogen chloride or trialkylammonium hydrogen sulfate; the Lewis acid is aluminum trichloride, boron halide, carbon dioxide, boron ester, boron oxide, and a mixture of boron oxide and boron ester; and the Lewis base is selected from a ether type compound of the formula RO(CH2CH2O)R', amine of the formula R'R"R"'N, alkyl sulfide of the formula R'SR", or phospine of the formula RR'R"P.
