An apparatus and a method for automatically controlling a map display level in a navigation system are provided to prevent repeated manipulations in the course of driving by changing a map display level easily with a simple manipulation. An apparatus for automatically controlling a map display level in a navigation system includes an input unit(120), a controller(150), a timer(160), a map display level controller(170), and a display unit(180). The input unit includes buttons for increasing or decreasing a map display level, and a stop button for stopping a level change. The controller generates a control signal for displaying the map, generates a timer driving signal, and turns off the timer under control of the input unit. The timer generates an event under control of the controller. The map display level controller automatically adjusts the map display level corresponding to the increase and decrease of the display level when the event is generated. The display unit enlarges and reduces a map under control of the map display level controller.
