A method and a system for providing traffic information are provided to enable various users to receive the traffic information by providing the traffic information with various formats. A data collector(310) receives target position information from a terminal. A collection information database(390) stores predetermined congestion areas. A data generator(320) matches the target position information to an electronic map and generates traffic information using unit nodes based on the map-matched result. A data processor(330) generates traffic information by processing the traffic information in the target position referring to the collection information database. A traffic information providing unit(340) provides the traffic information to the outside. The data processor includes a map matching module(322) and a traffic information generating module(324). The map matching module occasionally updates the electronic map by using the position information from the data collector. The traffic information generating module determines whether a moving object passes by a predetermined area between the unit nodes, and generates the traffic information by calculating a passing time and a passing distance.
