A film- or fibre-forming copolyester contains a minor proportion, e.g. 0.5-10 mol. per cent of the total, of structural units containing at least one sulphonate group in the form of the metal salt, and a minor proportion also, e.g. 0.1-0.8% of the total weight, of a basic nitrogenous organic compound. Suitable polyesters may be derived from terephthalic acid or bis-(p-carboxyphenoxy) ethane, which may be used conjointly with isophthalic, adipic or sebacic acid, and the dito deca-methylene glycols or 1:4-bis-(hydroxy-methyl) cyclohexane. The sulphonate group may be contained by a dicarboxylic acid or a dihydric alcohol. The basic nitrogenous compound may be introduced into the polyester (i) with any of the starting materials for the formation of the polyester, (ii) after formation of the polyester and before shaping, (iii) during shaping or (iv) after shaping. In examples, a copolyester from dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol, and sodium dimethyl isophthalate-5-sulphonate is (1) melted and spun, 2-diethylaminoethyl nicotinate being applied to the thread while still molten, and (2) ground with tribenzylamine, then melt-spun to give fibres. |
