Flame retardant resin composition contains a metal hydrate that is surface treated with a silane adhesion promoter. A flame retardant resin composition (I) comprises: (A) 100 pts.wt. of a thermoplastic resin component comprising (A1) 100 pts.wt. of a block copolymer, optionally hydrogenated, that comprises at least two polymer blocks of an aromatic vinyl compound as the main component and a conjugated diene compound, (A2) 10-100 pts.wt. of a non-aromatic rubber plasticizer, (A3) 30-400 pts.wt. of an ethylene/ alpha -olefin copolymer, (A4) 0-200 pts.wt. of a polypropylene resin, (A5) 0.01-0.6 pts.wt. of an organic peroxide, (A6) 0.03-1.8 pts.wt. of a (meth)acrylate and/or allyl crosslinking agent; and (B) 50-300 pts.wt. of a metal hydrate; whereby: (i) when (B) is present at 50-100 pts.wt., at least 50 pts.wt. of (B) is pretreated with a silane adhesion promoter; (ii) when (B) is present at 100-300 pts.wt., at least half of (B) is pretreated with a silane adhesion promoter. (I) is mixed at a temperature at least that of the m.pt. of (A). Independent claims are included for (i) a molded article having a covering layer of (I) over a conductor or optical fiber and (ii) a process for the production of (I) by the simultaneous kneading and heating of the composition at the m.pt. of (I).
