A substrate and an electro-optical display device comprising said substrate. The substrate comprises a display area (11) and sealing material disposed on the periphery thereof. The substrate further comprises a retention and buffer area (13) disposed between the display area (11) and the sealing material, said retention and buffer area accommodating an electro-optical display medium. When the electro-optical display device is impacted by an external force or is bent, the retention and buffer area serves to reduce the amount or prevent an excessive amount of electro-optical display medium impacting the sealing material, extending the service life of the sealing material and prevents leakage of said medium.
