A winch for tensioning fence wires, etc. has a body assembled from two complementary shells to support a winding drum fitted with a ratchet. The shells may be of cast Al and opt. are coated with e.g. epoxy resin, 'Rilsan' (RTM - alpha-omega polyamide) or a polyester resin. The shells are resistant to corrosion and the device is less bulky.
