A method is described for the thermal cleaning of soil which is contaminated, in particular, with organohalogen compounds, the contaminated soil being admixed with activated carbon in an amount of at least 0.5 wt%, based on the weight of the dry contaminated soil, and the mixture of contaminated soil and activated carbon being brought into contact, at a temperature of 300-750 degree C, with an amount of hydrogen sufficient to bind the heteroatoms present in the organic compounds. Preferably, a mixture of hydrogen and an inert gas as a carrier gas is used.
