1461831 1,4-Butanediol GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 15 March 1974 [30 May 1973] 11662/74 Heading C2C 1,4-Butanediol is made by reacting propylene, oxygen and a C 1-6 alkanoic acid in the presence of Pd, Ru, Rh, Pt, Os, Ir or their salts or oxides, or mixtures thereof, at an elevated temperature; hydroformylating the resulting allyl alkanoate; hydrogenating the formed mixture of 4-alkanoyloxybutyraldehyde, 3-alkanoyloxy-2-methylpropionaldehyde, and 2-alkanoyloxybutyraldehyde to the corresponding alcohols; hydrolysing the latter to give the corresponding diols and the alkanoic acid; separating the diols from the acid and recycling the latter. |
