The present invention relates to a toothbrush with an improved cleaning effect. This is achieved in that the bundles of bristles in the bristle head are arranged so that, when viewed in the longitudinal direction, the outer rows comprise longer bristles whose tips are rounded by mechanical processing in a manner known per se, whereas the bristles in the inner rows are shorter as compared to the bristles in the outer rows and are thickened on their tips like a mushroom to about twice the diameter of the untreated bristles by a heat treatment, predominantly by means of a stream of hot air or a laser beam.
