A bag and the apparatus and method for making the bag, the bag being made of a flexible packaging material has a generally tubular body portion which is closed at the end regions thereof by respective transversely extending seals 406, 408, and having at least one compartment 512 and/or stiffening rib 514 which extend in a longitudinal/lengthwise direction of the bag body portion, wherein the at least one compartment and/or stiffening rib consists of a fold in the body portion and is disposed within the body portion. The bag may be made from a web of material (see Figure 1) which has the folds applied to the web in a longitudinal direction thereof prior to the web being formed into a tube (see Figure 3). A sealing strip (506, Figure 8) may be applied over the external corner of the folds by a suitable device. An embodiment (Figure 8) is also disclosed that has the stiffening ribs (524) projecting outwardly from the body portion of the bag. |
