The beam from the motor vehicle headlamp is directed by controlling electric motors which couple movement to mobile parts of the headlamp, particularly the reflector. There are two motors (M1,M2) which can each be controlled to displace two moving parts of the headlamp. These parts can move between two discrete position. The transmission mechanism that couples the motors to the lamp combines the two discrete displacements to deliver a number of discrete positions (P0-P3). The two motors have rotary outputs which are converted to linear displacement of the adjustable parts which move in different paths. The linear motion operates linkages (15,16).
