PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbonaceous material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, a negative electrode for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery which have a satisfactory charge-discharge capacity and a satisfactory resistance against degradation owing to oxidation.SOLUTION: A carbonaceous material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery has: a (002)-plane average spacing d002 within a range of 0.36-0.42 nm, which is calculated according to Bragg's equation by a wide angle x-ray diffraction method; a specific surface area within a range of 1-20 m/g, which is determined by a nitrogen absorption BET three-point method; a nitrogen element content of 0.5 wt.% or less; an oxygen element content of 0.25 wt.% or less; and a Raman spectrum peak half-value width in the vicinity of 1360 cmin a range of 155-185 cm, which is observed by laser Raman spectroscopy.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
