PURPOSE:To accurately detect the damage of a tool through a simple construction, by determining the ratio of vibration component in the direction of circumferential machining force to that in the direction of traverse machining force when the vibration components exceed a reference level and by detecting the damage in terms of the ratio. CONSTITUTION:Detection signals from a circumferential machining vibration component detector 1 and a traverse machining vibration component detector 1', which are made of a piezoelectric converter, an acoustic emission signal measuring unit or the like, are processed through amplifiers 2, 2' and filters 3, 3' so that signals (a), (b) are applied to a comparator 4. When the signals (a), (b) of vibration components exceed a reference level, the comparator 4 transmits these signals to a divider 5 and the ratio of the signals is calculated by the divider. The ratio is compared with a reference value by another comparator 6. Another signal is supplied to an alarm 7 depending on the result of the comparison. |
