PURPOSE: A boronizing powder and a method for forming a boride layer on the metal surface using the same are provided to form a boride layer having a high hardness on the surface of a metal component more economically than in the past by using boron oxide as a boron supplier. CONSTITUTION: A boronizing powder consists of 3 to 66 wt% of boron oxide, 2 to 44 wt% of aluminum which reduces the boron oxide with boron, 3 to 10 wt% of KBF4 which activates the reduced boron, and the balance of SiC or alumina powder diluent. A method for forming a boride layer on the metal surface comprises the steps of preparing the boronizing powder composed of 3 to 66 wt% of boron oxide, 2 to 44 wt% of aluminum which reduces the boron oxide with boron, 3 to 10 wt% of KBF4 which activates the reduced boron, and the balance of SiC or alumina powder diluent, charging the powder and metal components to be boronized into a heat resistant container, and heating them for 1 to 24 hours.
