Embodiments of the present invention disclose a method for providing a file download service, where the method includes: receiving a download request from a client, where the download request includes a target URL and information about a name of a file to be downloaded; pre-obtaining part of bytes of the file to be downloaded from a target website according to the target URL and the information about the name of the file to be downloaded, which are in the download request, and a preset pre-obtaining rule; obtaining a Hash value through performing Hash processing on the pre-obtained part of bytes of the file to be downloaded; and providing the file to be downloaded for the client when a same Hash value is found in a preset buffered file information list. This method effectively reduces the number of times for repeatedly downloading the file to be downloaded, saves storage space in the buffering system, and reduces egress traffic and bandwidth consumption.
