A separator for separating solids and liquids from a feed material containing a mix of solids and liquids, the separator includes a tank having a top, generally vertical side walls, and a convergently tapered bottom. A clarified liquid outlet is provided at or near the top of the tank and a sludge outlet is provided from the tapered bottom of the tank. A generally vertically aligned feed conduit is located within the tank near the top thereof, the feed conduit including a feed section and a discharge section. The feed section is adapted to receive feed material and the discharge section is adapted to discharge feed material into the tank below the top thereof. The discharge section preferably tapers outwardly in a downward direction. |
