PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mold clamping apparatus for an injection molding machine in which energy saving can be performed more in comparison with a hydraulic type and there exists no possibility of leakage of oil and mold clamping can be performed with high mechanical efficiency. SOLUTION: In this mold clamping apparatus, a platen-like locking frame 31 following a movable mold platen is arranged on the side of the movable mold platen 10 forwarding and retreating to a fixed mold platen 2 and a cylindrical shaft 12 is projected from the center of the side face of the movable mold platen and the cylindrical shaft is slidably penetrated through the center of the mold clamping frame and conical disks 37 and 38 are fitted so as to face their projected faces inward before and behind the cylindrical shaft pinching this locking frame and a plurality of wedges 71 whose inclined faces face outward are radially arranged so as to surround the cylindrical shaft on both side faces of the mold clamping frame and wedge moving mechanisms which move the wedge along the frame side faces in the radial direction by means of reduction motors 78 each with a brake are provided on both side faces of the mold clamping frame and mold clamping force is generated by pushing the wedges on the side face of the movable platen to the center to push the inclined faces of the disks and the mold clamping force is gone by pushing the wedges on the opposite side face to the center.
