A liquid crystal display for displaying an image by driving a liquid crystal composition showing cholesteric phase and an electronic paper employing it in which high reflectance is achieved while limitation on the number of display surfaces is relaxed. The liquid crystal display comprises a first display unit (1a), a second display unit (1b), a light absorption layer (15) so arranged on the back surface of the first display unit (1a) as to absorb the light entering at the surface of the first display unit (1a) and transmitting the first display unit (1a), and a control circuit section (23) for switching between a both side display mode where the second display unit (1b) is laminated on the back surface of the first display unit (1a) oppositely thereto through the light absorption layer (15) and images are displayed independently on the first display unit (1a) and the second display unit (1b), and a high definition mode where the second display unit (1b) is laminated on the front surface of the first display unit (1a) oppositely thereto and the same image is displayed on the first and second display units (1a, 1b). |
