PURPOSE:To obtain a solvent-soluble chlorinated polyolefin capable of providing an ink excellent in gloss, whiteness, heat resistance, etc., by chlorinating a polyolefin having a specified specific surface area through chlorination according to the aq. suspension process using oxygen. CONSTITUTION:A polyolefin (e.g. polyethylene) having a specific surface area of 200 to 20,000cm<2>/g is suspended in water or hydrochloric acid. Chlorine gas is blown into the resultant suspension to chlorinate the polyolefin to a chlorine content of 56 to 75wt.%. Either throughout or during part of the chlorination reaction, a peroxide (e.g. dicumyl peroxide) is added to the reaction system, or a chlorine-contg. gas contg. 5-95vol.% oxygen and/or ozone is used to effect oxidation treatment of the polyolefin. According to the foregoing procedure, a solvent-soluble chlorinated polyolefin is obtd., which has a functional group index of 0.2 to 100 as defined blow in IR spectrophotometry. 5-95% chlorinated polyolefin thus obtd. is used to manufacture an ink compsn. excellent in ink gloss, etc. Functional group index = (Absorbance at 1730cm<-1>/absorbance at 1440cm<->)X100. |
