PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle periphery monitoring device capable of photographing the periphery of a vehicle with a camera and displaying the images, which are photographed by the camera, on a display means in the vehicle replacing them automatically from one to the other with proper timing. SOLUTION: The periphery of the vehicle 1 is photographed by a camera 50 mounted on the vehicle 1, a change between two images photographed at different points is detected, and the image displayed on a liquid crystal display in the vehicle is replaced from one to the other according to detection results. The detection of a change between two images is carried out not covering the whole image, but covering a limited detection range 101 within a prescribed scope from the vehicle 1 in the forward direction and backward direction of the vehicle 1. The detection range 101 is adjusted according to the steering angle of the steering wheel of the vehicle 1, and moreover, a range, in which the illuminance of each pixel is not settled between an upper and a lower limits, is excluded. A replacing operation is not carried out while a wiper is in operation and lamps are turned on. Photographing conditions at the time when images are photographed by the camera 50 are acquired, and detection processing is carried out after the images are corrected according to a difference between the photographing conditions of two images.
