PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide both a vertical type self-combusting carbonization furnace readily responsive to a variation of the amount of a raw material to be treated without replacing a core and a method for operating the carbonization furnace. SOLUTION: This vertical type self-combusting carbonization furnace 1 comprises the core 12 arranged in the lower part of the vertical type self- combusting carbonization furnace 1 capable of combusting a part of the organic waste raw material charged from the upper part, carbonizing the part with heat of combustion thereof and producing a charcoal and having a conical body 11a in the upper part thereof and a vertical cross-section truncated conical body 11c formed by tilting a sidewall continuously to the lower part of the conical body 11a in a fan-shaped state from the upper part toward the lower part. Air supply ports 8a to 8d for primary combustion for supplying air for the primary combustion corresponding to the operation level according to the throughput to the top surface of a ring-shaped space packed layer 13 formed between the inner surface of a sidewall 4 of the carbonization furnace 1 and the lateral face of the core 12 are arranged in several stages at an interval in the vertical directions in the sidewall 4 of the carbonization furnace 1.
