A vehicle transmission has a drive shaft 114 which is connected to a rotary actuator 112 and a linear actuator 110 so that it is movable axially and rotary for independent operation of at least two gear shift rails 102, 104 and a clutch 106 or brake. The drive shaft 114 includes a selection finger 116, which rotates with the drive shaft 114 and engages a selection member 118, 120, 122 on one of the shift rails 102, 104 and when the drive shafts 114 moves axially an axial push/pull force is applied to the members 118, 120, 122 so that forks 124, 126 may engage gears in the transmission. A coupling arrangement having a rocker may also be provided while in another embodiment a rotary selector device may used. In yet another embodiment a link member having an electromagnetic latch for holding the link member in a load transmitting position replaces the rotary actuator. |
