A carbonaceous substance such as high-purity fullerenes or carbon nanotubes, a monocyclic hydrocarbon compound, or a polycyclic hydrocarbon compound is easily and efficiently grown with satisfactory precision. A carbon insertion reaction is conducted in an atmosphere comprising a carbene carbon :C to thereby grow a carbonaceous substance such as fullerenes or carbon nanotubes or a hydrocarbon compound such as naphthalene or anthracene while diminishing side reactions. The carbene carbon :C is obtained from a substance by at least one of photodecomposition, discharge, and pyrolysis or is obtained from a halogenated carbon by halogen abstraction reaction, etc.
