A method for managing a network and a communication device in which the structure of the communication unit can be altered freely and any terminal can operate as a hub terminal for controlling the network. Following to network management information transmitted periodically from a hub terminal, terminal synchronization information is transmitted from each leaf terminal and then data is transmitted from each terminal. The network management information includes a network ID held by the hub terminal, information indicative of use/nonuse of a station ID in the network as station ID information, and a terminal synchronization information transmission request designating a leaf terminal to transmit a terminal synchronization signal. Teaf terminals designated by the terminal synchronization information transmission request transmit respective terminal synchronization information sequentially following to the network management information.
