A backlight for a display comprises a plurality of independently controllable light sources and inclined surfaces inclining in a radially outward direction from each light source for shaping the distribution of emitted light. The light sources may each comprise a group of differently-colored light emitters. The backlight may include light integrators configured to mix light of the differently-colored light emitters. Inclined surfaces for shaping the distribution of emitted light may be arranged around exits of the light integrators.

1. A cinema projector, comprising:
a plurality of laser light sources; an optical fiber connecting the laser light sources to a light integrator;
wherein the light integrator is disposed such that light output from the light integrator so as to generate an array of light emissions, each having a Point Spread Function (PSF), positioned such that the array of light emissions and their corresponding PSFs illuminate a modulator; andwherein the PSFs of the array of light emissions are controlled so as to mix together in a manner where adjacent light emissions of the array of light emissions mix heavily at a rate of greater than 45% of peak value within an area covered by a full width at half maximum of the PSFs.
